Reviving Tradition: Giuliano Ricciardi's Iedde

A Redesigned Mussel Knife Honoring Taranto's Maritime Culture

Giuliano Ricciardi breathes new life into a traditional tool, the grammella, used for shelling mussels in Taranto, Italy. His redesign, the Iedde, is a tribute to the city's maritime culture and the Slow Food Presidium-recognized Taranto black mussel.

Giuliano Ricciardi's Iedde is more than just a mussel knife. It's an iconic object that encapsulates the traditions and territory of Taranto, Italy. Inspired by the shape of the Taranto black mussel, the Iedde is a modern take on the traditional grammella, a tool used for shelling mussels. The design of the Iedde is a testament to the designer's deep understanding of the tool's use, the geographical context, and the mussel itself.

The Iedde's unique properties lie in its ergonomics and design. The handle, inspired by the mussel's shape, fits comfortably in the palm, while the blade follows the curve of the grip, connecting harmoniously to the base. This design makes the tool easy to handle and more effective than the traditional grammella, which, being linear, forced the user to tilt the hand.

The Iedde is crafted with precision and care. The blades, made from ma5mv stainless steel, are laser-cut from a 2 mm sheet metal and hardened with heat treatment in the oven. The handle, made from olive wood, is crafted using a CNC machine. The components are then assembled in a sandwich structure with two through pins and finished with manual and bench equipment. Each piece is branded and numbered with laser engraving, adding a touch of exclusivity.

The Iedde is not just a tool; it's a symbol of Taranto's maritime culture. It's a result of extensive historical research and interviews with mussel farmers and restaurateurs. The redesign of the traditional grammella was a challenging yet exciting task, as it involved overcoming simplicity and economy. Despite initial skepticism from sector operators, the Iedde was appreciated for its innovative features after they assessed its effectiveness.

The Iedde's significance extends beyond its functionality. It's a modern gift for the city of Taranto, a tangible visual message that pays tribute to the city's traditions and territory. This redesign operation has not only resulted in a more effective tool but also an iconic object that represents Taranto's maritime culture.

Giuliano Ricciardi's Iedde has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Golden A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The Iedde, with its unique design and cultural significance, certainly fits this description.
